I met the author of this book, Alberto Cervellera, in Santa Marina, Salina during my trip there in Sept. 2000. He runs the local movie theater and is the island's historian.
The Lauricella name figures prominently in Salina's founding and history. Most of the income of the island during the 1800's and early 1900's came from the sea and the exporting of capers.

The following are excerpts from the book, first in Italian and followed by my translation. The names Donato and De Luca also appear due to marrying into the Lauricella family.
Attorno al 1840, sposa Maria De Luca, sorella di pardon Giovanni, e costruisce, sulla strada principale della borgata Santa Marina (stratuni), un elegante immobile con un portico a tre archi. Ai piani superiori fissa la propria abitazione, mentre, negli amplissimi locali sottostanti, da vita al primo emporio commerciale dell'Isola, rifornita delle merci di genere vario, importate dai velieri, al ritorno dalle piu disparate destinazioni.
Around 1840, spouse Maria De Luca, sister of pardon Giovanni, constructs on the main road of Santa Marina, an elegant house with a porch and three arches. Grand improvments were made to the house and they started the first commercial business of the island. They resupplied the island with various items, imported from the ships, to made regular return trips.
Velieri di buona dimensione vengono cosi armati dalla famiglia di Felice Lauricella che avvia alla professione i figli Giovanni e Felice. Costoro iniziano a navigare con la piccola feluca Santa Maria di Porto Salvo, attivissima nel commercio con la Sicilia, ma quando raggiungono l'eta ed i requisiti per il comando dei velieri, la famiglia fa un salto
di qualita e, tra la fine degli anni '40 ed i primi anni '50, vara due marticane gemelle, battezzate con i nomi "Salina" ed "Ecce Homo" ed un bovo che viene chiamato "Immacolata".
Ships of good dimension come from the Felice Lauricella family. It was started by the sons Giovanni and Felice. Coastal navagation began with the small two-cornered ship "Saint Maria di Porto". They served on the ship and did commerce with Sicily. When the position of captain became available they took it and rose in statue and fortune. Between the end of the 1840's and the first years of the 1850's, they launched two twin ships, christened with the names "Salina" and "Ecce Homo" and a boat that is called "Immaculate".
Donato di buona attitudine al commercio, il giovane padrone consolida una buona posizione economica e, primo tra i salinari, con il concorso finanziario del cognato Giovanni Lauricella, riesce ad arricchire la flotta isolana di un agilissimo veliero che, pur armando un solo albero centrale, sostiene la velatura tipica delle golette. In realta, goletta la definisce pardon Bartolomeo Donato nel suo libro dei conti.
Bartolomeo Donato had a talent for commerce. This young man consolidated his position as the best on the islands, with the financial support of brother-in-law Giovanni Lauricella. He succeeded in enriching the island fleet with a most agile ship that used a single central mast.
In onore della madre Giuseppa, la nuova barca viene battezzata "La Peppina" e sin dai primi viaggi amplia notevolmente il quadro delle rotte praticate spingendosi di frequente fino a Tunisi ed al porto di Trieste. A 30 anni Bartolomeo si sposa, imparentandosi con i Lauricella, ed inizia con costoro un sodalizio commerciale destinato a piu ampi successi.
In honor of their mother, Giuseppa, the new boat is christened "the Peppina" and from the first local travels the routes widened remarkabily to Tunisi and the port of Trieste. At 30 years of age Bartolomeo and his spouse, (due to his marrying into the Lauricella family,) began a commercial industry destined to be a big success.
Si conserva ancora all'estremita settentrionale del corso di Santa Marina il sontuoso palazzotto, costruito poco dopo il matrimonio con Maria Concetta Lauricella, che mostra con chiarezza lo stato di benessere raggiunto.
To maintain control over the northern routes of Santa Marina the grand mansion, constructed soon after the wedding with Maria Concetta Lauricella, they lived a good life.
Di grani, farina e legumi si occupa anche Giuseppe Lo Schiavo che, insieme ad una rivendita, possiede anche alcuni carati della marticana "Salina" armata dalla famiglia Lauricella, dove sovente troviamo imbarcati i figli Giuseppe jr. ed Antonino.
Giuseppe Lo Schiavo sells grains, flour and beans. He also possesses some shares of the ship "Salina" from the Lauricella family, where the sons Giuseppe jr. and Antonino are often found.
Un altro Lauricella, infine, Giovanni che passa alla storia locale con il patronimico "Piula", stipa nei magazzini terraglie e merce orientale che attraverso i due velieri "Madonna del Carmelo" e "Provvidenza", vende poi in tutto il basso tirreno.
Giovanni Lauricella, who pass to the local history with the patronimico "Piula", fills the warehouses with earthenwares and oriental goods. He then sells them through the two ships "Madonna of the Carmelo" and "Providence", to all the tyrrhenian ports.
Anche questo padrone marittimo percorre la rischiosissima rotta di Malta dove, secondo un ex voto custodito sino a pochi anni fa nella sagrestia della chiesa di Santa Marina, sfugge ad un assalto piratesco salvando se stresso ed il veliero.
Also this man of the sea covered the risky route off of Malta where, according to a record guarded in the church of Santa Marina, escaped a pirate attack and saved the ships.
I commerci con Malta, tuttavia, non sono l'unica attivita di pardon Giovanni. Una delle due barche e quotidianamente impiegata per il trasporto di vino e malvasia sulle consuete rotte del basso Tirreno e per il refornimento di stocco essiccato da rivendere in tutto l'Arcipelago. Il versante locale dei traffici di famiglia viene governato dal fratello
minore Angelo Lauricella, che gestisco anche un'attivita di produzione e vendita di pesce salato.
The commerce with Malta, however, is not the only one used by pardon Giovanni. One of his two boats were daily employed for the transport of malvasia grapes and wine on the customary routes of the Tyrrhenian ports and for the resupply of stock vital to trade in all the Archipelago. The family finances were managed by the smaller brother Angelo Lauricella, and he also produced the sale of salted fish.
Il coraggio e l'operosita dei Lauricella, almeno nella prima parte della loro vita, si traduce in fortuna, largamente visibile nei ricchi palazzetti che la famiglia fa edificare lungo la via della Sanita.
The courage and the skills of the Lauricella family, at least in the first part of their lives, translated to fortune, which was widely visible in the rich houses that the family build up along the coastline of Salina.
Felice Lauricella sposa Caterina Benenati ed ha 8 figli, I primi due, Giovanni (1827-1902) e Felice (1830-1916), iniziano giovanissimi l'attivita marinara con viaggi per Taranto e verso le coste ioniche della Calabria. Tra gli anni '40 e '60 troviamo Giovanni al comando della marticana "Immacolata" e Felice al comando della feluca "S. Maria di Porto Salvo". Giovanni, in particolare, proprietario di diversi immobili sull Isola, abita a S. Marina nella casa ancora oggi in parte visibile, risalendo la via Risorgimento, sulla sinistra poco prima dell'incrocio con la via Francesco Crispi. La casa e riconoscibile per il grazioso portoncino d'ingresso ai piani superiori, del tutto simile a quello di pardon Domenico Giuffre jr. L'architrave e sormontato da una grata in ferro battuto a semicerchio dove sono ancora visibili le iniziali G. L.
Felice Lauricella and Caterina Benenati had 8 sons, the first two, Giovanni (1827-1902) and Felice (1830-1916), begins the young the attivita duffle-coat with travels for Taranto and towards the ionic coasts of the Calabria. Between years 1840 and 1860 we find Giovanni to the commando of the "Immaculate" and Felice marticana to the commando of feluca "S. Maria di Porto". Giovanni, in particular, owner of various pieces of real estate on the Island, lives still today to S. Marina in the house in visible part, going back the way Renaissance, on left little before the crossing with the way the Francisco Crispi. The recognizable house and for the graceful one portoncino of income to the advanced plans, of the all similar to that one of pardon Domenico Giuffre jr. architrave and sormontato from a grate in struck iron to semicircle where the initials G. L are still visible.
