THOMAS SCUDDER is said to have been a son of "Rev. Dr. Henry Scudder of England, who presided at a convention of clergymen appointed by the King at Westminster in 1643," and to have come from Groton, England, in 1636 with his wife ELIZABETH, and children John and Elizabeth.

He settled in Salem, Mass., and died in 1657. The daughter married Samuel Lothrop. A correspondent of the New York Evening Mail, February 25, 1905, says the wife of Thomas Scudder was Elizabeth Lowers of Daruth, Kent Co., England, and gives the following children: John; Thomas; Henry, married Catherine Este; Elizabeth, born in 1622; married, 1st, Henry Bartholomew, and second, November 28, 1644, Samuel Lothrop; William; and Martha.

SCUDDER

THOMAS1 SCUDDER, born in England, was of Salem, Mass., where he was a proprietor as early as 1638. He married in England, Elizabeth Lowers.

He is said to have made his will Sep. 30, 1657, which was proved June 29, 1658. The inventory of his widow's estate was filed Nov. 29, 1666. Thomas and Elizabeth (Lowers) Scudder had at least 5 children.

John Lowers of Darnth, Kent, husbandman, 8 June 1645 will proved 5 Feb. 1650. I give and bequeath unto Thomas Lowers half my part of Roxly Wood, which I hold and my sister Scudder and Henry Scudder her son, of Mr. Buggings in lease, paying yearly that part the sum of four pounds ten shillings during the full term thereof, to my sister Scudder's sons, Thomas, Henry, William and John Scudder, twenty shillings apiece and to her two daughters Elizabeth and Martha Scudder, ten shillings apiece to be paid within one year after my decease by my executor. To my cousin Thomas Lowers, twenty shillings within one year & etc. Wife Mary to be full executor and John Umphrey of Darnth yoeman and Thomas Lowers of Dartford husbandman to be overseers. Grey, 27.

(Since our Thomas Scudder of Salem (1648) had children named John, Thomas, Henry, William and Elizabeth, I cannot but think I have found traces of his family in the above will, if that should turn out to be correct the following will should be saved.--Signed H. F. W.)

SCUDDER--The common ancestor of the Family on L. I. was Thomas 1, who was b., in Eng., and is believed to have been among the earliest settlers at Plymouth, Mass. His wife's name was Elizabeth.

He resided at Salem from 1642 to 1657; and the Records of that Town show grants of land to "Old Goodman Scudder" (the term "Goodman" indicating an honorable position in the Puritan Church).

He d. at Salem, in 1657. (Hon. Henry C. Platt's "Huntington Address"--1876)
