Frederick Trott, Jr. was born in 1797 in Canton Basel, Switzerland. He was married in 1833 to Magdalene Meier in Basel, Switzerland. They had eleven children. Nine children were born in Laufelfingen, Basel, Switzerland, and two were born in Erie County, Ohio.

In 1848, the family came to America. They were very poor and came storage, the cheapest, on the bottom deck of the boat. The women were seasick and the children always hungry. It took six weeks to make this trip. Two of the children (Rudolph and Lena) died in September 1848. They possibly died at sea and were buried at sea. The family settled on a farm near Sandusky, Ohio in Margaretta Township, Erie County. The land was mostly woods. The men and boys felled the trees, cut logs, and planed them to build their first home--a log cabin.

Frederick and Magdaline (Myers) Trott had twelve children--six sons and six daughters. He was a tinsmith by trade and in May, 1848, he sailed with his family for America. There were no steamers at that time and the sailing craft was upon the bosom of the Atlantic for forty-seven days before it reached the harbor of New York. The Trott family did not continue long in the East, coming at once to Ohio. They stopped first at Sandusky City and in a short time Mr. Trott had his family comfortably located on a small farm near that place.

In 1865 he came to Seneca County and purchased one hundred and forty acres of land in Seneca Township. He continued its cultivation until his death, but was not long permitted to enjoy his new home, for his life's labors were ended in 1869.

Residential note: The Trott farm was apparently located on the west bank of the Sandusky River north of McCutchenville. Laura Stellhorn has 3 photos of the homestead apparently taken in the 1930's when it appears it was abandoned. On the back of the photos there are notes indicating the farm was purchased by Frederick and Magdalena several years after arriving in Sandusky. The photos show a two-story wood shingle building. The home is located on the south side of road T-131.
