Information received from Bernice Dornbirer: Harold enjoyed attending state tax parties, meeting with family and church member friends, and helping his sons with farming and raising livestock. He met Bernice Falter at a church festival, and they eloped.

Harold Dornbirer Named to State Sales Tax Post

With the unanimous endorsement of the Republican executive committee of Crawford County of which Attorney C. Victor Vollrath is chairman, Harold Dornbirer of Chatfield has been appointed by Governor John Bricker an examiner in the division of sales and excise taxes, it was reported here today.

Dornbirer, the son of the Rev. Paul Dornbirer of Chatfield, has held several responsible positions in recent years. He was assistant postmaster of Chatfield for three years until 1932 when, during an administration of President Herbert Hoover he was appointed postmaster. He presided in this capacity until the fall of 1936.

He was graduated from Chatfield High School in 1927.

Monday he reported to Charles W. Burke, examiner in charge of the Norwalk office during the absence of R.O. Perrott of Bucyrus.

Harold E. Dornbirer

The Rev. George K. Swartzfager officiated at services at 1:30 p.m. today at Nazareth Lutheran Church in Chatfield for Harold E. Dornbirer, 75, of 2455 Brokensword Road, Bucyrus. Burial followed in Holy Trinity Cemetery, Bucyrus.

The family suggests memorials be in the form of contributions to Nazareth Lutheran Church.

Mr. Dornbirer died Friday morning, April 13, 1984, at Bucyrus Hospital. He had been in failing health for three years, seriously ill for a week.

He was born August 28, 1908 in Dola, Ohio to Paul F. and Margaret A. (Ruppright) Dornbirer. On September 19, 1937, he married Bernice Falter, who survives, along with four children, Paul of Sycamore, Dennis and Harold Jr., both of Bucyrus, and Mrs. Douglas (Kay) Bishop of Bloomville; two sisters, Mrs. Wilbur (Margie) Felter of Tiffin and Mrs. Grace Kutz of Seattle, Washington; 16 grandchildren and one great-granddaughter. Another sister and a brother are deceased.

Mr. Dornbirer was appointed postmaster in Chatfield in 1932 and served there four years, then was a sales and excise tax examiner for the state of Ohio, retiring in 1970. He had lived in the Bucyrus area since he was a young boy. He was a 1927 graduate of Chatfield High School and a member of Nazareth Lutheran Church.
