Hans Jacob Dorenbirer, Sr. was an inventor of machinery in Canton Thurgau, Switzerland. He came to this country sometime before 1860 and disembarked in Sandusky, Ohio. He was interested in the Indians of America about whom his son, Jacob Jr., had written him. He was living with his son Jacob in Adams Township, Seneca County during the time of the 1860 census and in Loudonville, Ohio during the time of the 1870 census.

Edith Dornbirer visited Hans Jacob Sr.'s grave with her father shortly before her father's death. Edith's father (August Henry Dornbirer) told her his father, Jacob Jr., was a great help to his mother, Anna Ursula, because there were so many children. He helped with the washing, diapers, and the dishes. Hans Jacob Sr. belonged to the Reformed Church in Switzerland.
